Swordfish Fisheries and Management Today

چکیده

vailing currents and use their highly developed sight to stalk prey. Female swordfish grow faster and live longer than males. They reach their maximum size (usually ~350 kg) at about 15 years of age. Male and female swordfish have different distributions depending on size. Within swordfish populations, a proportion of the fish associates with underwater features such as banks and seamounts. Such features were often the focus of fisheries when they first began to develop. Modern longliners are potentially capable of removing these ‘resident’ components of swordfish populations at a greater rate than they can be replaced by growth and immigration. Swordfish may thus be inclined to local depletion around underwater features.

Extensions of Remarks 5829

Mr. SAXTON. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to introduce H.R. 1367, the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Conservation Act of 2001. I am pleased to be here today to talk about such an important issue. We stand at an historic crossroads for the conservation of highly migratory species (HMS). The effective management of Atlantic HMS is one of the most complex and difficult challenges facing the Nationa...

Tuna and swordfish catch in the U.S. northwest Atlantic longline fishery in relation to mesoscale eddies

To analyze the effects of mesoscale eddies, sea surface temperature (SST), and gear configuration on the catch of Atlantic bluefin (Thunnus thynnus), yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and swordfish (Xiphias gladius) in the U.S. northwest Atlantic longline fishery, we constructed multivariate statistical models relating these variables to the catch of the four speci...

Fit to predict? Eco-informatics for predicting the catchability of a pelagic fish in near real time.

The ocean is a dynamic environment inhabited by a diverse array of highly migratory species, many of which are under direct exploitation in targeted fisheries. The timescales of variability in the marine realm coupled with the extreme mobility of ocean-wandering species such as tuna and billfish complicates fisheries management. Developing eco-informatics solutions that allow for near real-time...

Geographically Widespread Swordfish Barcode Stock Identification: A Case Study of Its Application

BACKGROUND The swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is a cosmopolitan large pelagic fish inhabiting tempered and tropical waters and it is a target species for fisheries all around the world. The present study investigated the ability of COI barcoding to reliably identify swordfish and particularly specific stocks of this commercially important species. METHODOLOGY We applied the classical DNA barcodi...

1 Mediterranean Issues : towards Effective Fisheries Management

The EU’s Member States bordering the Mediterranean – France, Greece, Italy and Spain have important and often locally significant fisheries sectors, operating in an environment that is characterised by high biological diversity. Despite the existence of an otherwise ‘common’ EU fisheries policy, Mediterranean fisheries have traditionally been subject to separate EU fish stock management measure...
